Awake Men: Embracing Emotional Masculinity

Description

This week on Wake the F*ck Up we have a very special episode for you. David Long hosts a men's roundtable discussion, bringing together three men with diverse perspectives and backgrounds to share their unique insights on living consciously, mindfulness, waking up, authenticity and vulnerability.

Meet Our Men!

  • Earl Hagans: Earl is from New Orleans and is a formerly incarcerated person. During the roundtable, he shares how that experience has shaped his life and what it means to him.
  • Lou Relayson: Also from New Orleans, but a current resident of New York, Lou is a trans person. He shares his experiences with self-actualization, mental illness, divorce, and the sometimes-ugly but always-worth-it fight to live his life authentically.
  • Andrew Wayne Taylor: Andrew is a full-time digital media creator, editor of Wake the F*ck Up and yoga and breathwork enthusiast.

No topics are off-limits as David sits down with our guests to discuss masculinity and the role male models had in each of their lives (or lack thereof) as well as emotional awareness and vulnerability. David asks the guests if there was a defining moment that caused them to become more “awake” and emotionally aware. You’ll have to tune in to hear the emotional and raw stories and insights from our guests on this topic. From addiction and mental illness to grief and loss, we cover a wide range of life journeys and experiences.

Next, David gets into healing – one of our favorite subjects here on Wake the F*ck Up. David, Lou, Earl and Andrew each share the tools and resources they use to practice mindfulness and support their mental health. From therapy to yoga, breathwork and meditation, we loved hearing each of our guests’ different answers on this topic.

Later in the episode, our host leads a discussion on interpersonal relationships, emphasizing the importance of communication for successful interpersonal relationships. David and the guests share how they have each come to learn better communication skills, what prompted them to become interested in learning about communication, and the tools and strategies that have been successful for them.

David caps things off with a reflection on how each of our guests represents a different generation and perspective, but they all had a lot on common when it comes to living consciously and authentically. We hope you love this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Let us know what insights you connected with most in the comments.
